Indian S-400 defence system is raising tensions for China-Pakistan. This is beacuse, S-400 is a very advance and potent air defence system. It is designed to shoot down any incoming aerial threats. Regardless, the aerial threat being stealthy. In October 2018, India signed a multi-billion dollar deal with Russia. The deal to procure 5 units of S-400 truimf.
What is Indian S-400 defence system? and how does it works?
The Indian S-400 defence system is a mobile, surface-to-air missile defence system. It is developed by Russia’s Almaz Central Design Bureau in the late 90s. The S-400 succeded the previous S-300. Consequently, it entered service in the Russian army in April 28, 2007. The components of S-400 are very simple. It consists of 2 batteries, each of which has a command-and-control system, a survelliance radar, engagement radar, 4 launch trucks. Besides, the S-400 is equipped with 4 types of missiles they are :
- short-range missile- range upto 40 km
- medium-range missile- range upto 120 km
- long-range missile- range upto 250 km
- very long range-missile- range upto 400km
Additionally, it has a flight-altitude of 250 km. Surprisingly, it can track upto 160 objects in a 600km range, and can shoot down 72 objects in a 400 km range.
The S-400’s working is very simple. Its long-range survelliance radars detects an aerial theat. Then, it calculates its trajectory and its command-vehicle fires missiles to counter it. The command vehicle of S-400 can protect much larger area, Identically, the S-400 has ability to boost India’s territorial sovereignty against threats of China-Pakistan.
Why the Indian S-400 defence system deal cannot be cancelled?
India cannot cancel its S-400 defence deal. Its because of its strategic and military needs. Furthermore, Indian military uses Russian-origin weapons in large numbers. As, is quoted by Indian foreign secretary. He says,” Without Russian spare parts and maintainance help, our ships won’t sail, our planes won’t fly.” Recently, India also signed a 3-billion dollar submaine deal. A Russian nuclear-powered ‘Akula-class’ submarine deal. Significantly, India cannot afford to cancel the S-400 deal as it is over-hyped in media.
If India dares to step out of the deal. It will compel Russia to find new customers. Explicitly, like Pakistan, China who have grave hostility towards India. To sum up, cancelling S-400 defence deal will anger Russia. An anger that will risk the currently operating Indian armed forces for spares. Identically, India shares a long history of defense ties with Russia. Currently, 65% of defence equipments of the Indian army are of Russian-origin.
specifically, India is heavily dependent on Russia for its spares and maintainance. Though, the percentage of Russian weapons are steadlily declining. Still the ball is in the court of Russia. Hence, owing to this fact, India cannot step out of S-400 defence deal.
Why is Indian S-400 defence system is being deployed against Pakistan and not China ?
A top Russian official confirmed in media about India’s S-400 delivery. He says,” Russia has started delivering the S-400 ‘Triumf’ missile defence system to India. He also confirms that it would be deployed in India’s western sector. Identically, the focus is Pakistan and not China. A retired Indian veteran tells about its deployment in the western sector. He says” Pakistan gets priority because of its grave hostility towards India.
Markedly, the current deployment to the western sector is due to its lesser availability. Furthermore, he adds political turmoil in Pakistan is a major threat to India. It must be remembered that religious orthodoxy and conservativeness is a problem. Explicitly, Pakistan inhibits all these. Hence, sooner or later these othodox religious may siege political power in Pakistan. This will again result in military conflict with India. Therefore, S-400 will neutralize any such threat from Pakistan.
Talking about China he says considering the present situation. China has a completely different set of objectives. Thereupon, China’s aim is to gain control of eastern Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh. Identically, to do this their air power is limited. This is because of terrain. The terrain restricts China’s aerial manuverability. As a result, of high mountains and altitude. Consequently, India has air superiority beacuse of low-land.
However, China is India’s number one enemy. But notably, Pakistan is much crazier and dangerous. Hence, the choice is to be made between ‘demon’ and ‘thief’. Consequently, India’s priority is Western sector.
Further the veteran adds, “the S-400 is a mobile defence system. Its not static. Therefore, their tremendous flexibility of deployment is a characteristic feature. A feature that will help India encounter any unforeseen situation from China and Pakistan.
What is C.A.A.T.S.A ? and Why cannot U.S. afford to sanction Indian S-400 defence system deal under C.A.A.T.S.A ?
Back in 2017, the U.S. goverment came up with an act. It a name is C.A.A.T.S.A (countering America’s adversaries through sanctions act). The CAATSA was passed on 2nd August,2017 by the then President Donald Truimph. Consequently U.S. through CAATSA imposed sanctions against 39 Russian firms. As, U.S. belives that Russia is behind the military conflicts of Ukraine and Syria. Chiefly, the CAATSA restricts arms purchase from ‘Iran’, ‘Russia’, ‘North-Korea’. However, the think tanks of U.S. and the West says that the Indian S-400 deal can attract CAATSA. As, its forbidden by an official U.S. law.
Conversely, analysts says U.S. will likely not impose CAATSA on India beacuse it cannot afford bad relations with India. It must be noted, ever since India finalise the deal U.S. has been issuing veiled threats of sanctions unde CAATSA. Markedly, U.S. says CAATSA is not to damage , military ties with India India but to alert it. An Indian defence expert tells about CAATSA. He says, the U.S. will not impose sanction as it needs India much more than India needs U.S. . Consequently, he says that India donot posses any defence system. This implies India is virtually defenceless. Therefore, India needs the S-400 system.
In the midst, of growing hostilities from China and Pakistan, Imposing CAATSA sanctions on India will prove dangerous. This will prove a diplomatic disaster for the U.S. . Additionally, he says that a weak India is not in the interest of the U.S. , as is said by a U.S. congressman. He says, “U.S. committs to do everything to boost India’s defence capabilities”.
Is S-400 really a stealth aircraft-killer missile defence system ?
Is S-400 really a stealth aircraft-killer missile defence system. This statement is really a topic of debate. Lets look into the facts. The U.S. planes like F-22 raptor, B-2 spirit are the stealthiest airplane of the world. They have radar cross-section less than that of a bird. At altitudes, where F-22, B-2 spirit flies, the visual detection from the ground is very low. These planes only increase their cross-section while firing weapons. Indeed that duration is too short for missiles to track and shoot. Chiefly, if S-400 uses low-frequency radio-waves to track those planes. It will prove insufficent.
Its so because, they cannot guide missiles. Conversely, one needs a serious network of air-defense system to track and shoot down those planes. As those planes fly at a very high-altitude. Therefore, virtually it is not possible.
Possible deployment of S-400 deployment on the geopolitics of Asia.why is India deploying S-400 against Pakistan and not China
India has purchased 5 units of S-400 from Russia. Conversely, places where it will be deployed is not precisely known. On the China border, large-scale infantry movement is difficult beacuse of harsh climate. Certainly, any major Chinese attack with a large aerial offensive will be countered by India boldly. Markedly, India will be deploying S-400 at strategically important locations. The places which will neutralise all the aerial threats from the Chinese.
However, reacting to this the Chinese have been aggessively backlashing India. It threatens that these deployments will not shield from China. Therefore, the S-400 deployment is worthless. But we all know, how capable S-400 is. Markedly, an authoritarian intruding regime is always at a disadvantageous position. India is a pluralistic democracy. Notably, she will risk everything to protect it.
